Description
There is a popular series called “BIRDS SING OUT OF TUNE”. The concept is to record first-time or rare studio outtakes. Of course, there are titles that cover outtakes on an album-by-album basis, but in the world of collectors, new discoveries are being made one after another. These new titles complement the existing outtake titles while recording them anew. There was a maniac who said that he couldn’t die until he had listened to all the Beatles’ recordings in the world, but people around him jokingly told him that even if they died, new recordings would come out every year. This is volume 3 of that “BIRDS SING OUT OF TUNE”. This is an indispensable work for maniacs, as it also includes recordings that were first-time appearances. “I’ll Follow The Sun” is a demo recording recorded in 1964. It is known that the framework of this song was already completed before the debut, but this demo recording is closer to the July 1960 version than the released version. “And I Love Her” is a backing track. It’s just a karaoke, but it’s making its debut. “It’s For You” is also a demo recorded in 1964. It’s a beautiful song that is full of Paul’s unique style, even though it’s a short recording. “Rock And Roll Music” is a different mix, and the backing piano is played differently from the released version. “I’m A Loser” includes the overdubbing of take 8. Next, six takes of the song are included from the “Eight Days A Week” session. This song was the opening song at Paul’s 2013 Japan concert. Since the chorus is a complex song, you can see that they tried and tested the intro. The released version starts with a rare fade-in, but it turns out that it was originally planned to start with the chorus. Takes 2, 4, and 5 are not the first appearance of the sound source itself, but the beginning and end are longer than those already released. Track 11 is the released take 13, but it doesn’t fade in, but starts properly with one note. “We Can Work It Out” was recorded before overdubbing, and although John’s chorus is included in the “life is very short…” part, the main impression is completely different, with Paul’s single-track vocals. It is a refreshing song with an atmosphere of embracing love, but when John’s chorus comes in, it suddenly becomes sad. “Girl” is also a backing track, just like the previously recorded “And I Love Her”. “Paperback Writer” is a different mix. “Rain” has a single track vocal, and John’s singing voice is so vivid that it feels like he is singing in a closed room up close. In particular, the “Raeeeeeeeeeen” part was composed of layered choruses in the released version, but here it is a single track, so it feels like listening to an outtake. Take 1 of “I’m Only Sleeping”, which is sung energetically despite the song title, is familiar, but this is the first time it has been recorded with a long ending. Following take 2, track 18 is the first backing track. The following three songs, “And Your Bird Can Sing”, “Got To Get You Into My Life” and “Penny Lane”, are also first backing tracks. The rehearsal sound source of “For No One” is an in-line recording, and although it is short, it is an upgraded sound source. The other track, “Penny Lane”, is a different mix with vocals at the forefront. “Tomorrow Never Knows” is also the first monitor mix. “SGT PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND” is a rare one, although the take is unknown, and you can hear Paul’s powerful vocals from the sound output. “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” is interrupted at the beginning when John starts laughing, and John seems to be coughing and not feeling well. Paul is also recorded giving singing instruction to John. “She’s Leaving Home” is the first sound source. It’s like an orchestra rehearsal, and at the end, Paul follows the melody with a scat. “A Day In The Life” is a different mix with a different piano. “It’s All Too Much” and “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey” are backing tracks that are making their first appearance. As mentioned above, this is volume 3 of “BIRDS SING OUT OF TUNE” which contains rare studio outtakes including some that are making their first appearance. There are certainly some great recordings among them, but I think that enthusiasts who have listened to volumes 1 and 2 will understand how rare they are. 1964 01. I’ll Follow The Sun (demo 1964) 02.
