Description
Cliff Burton died suddenly on September 27, 1986, in a tour bus rollover accident. A legendary video work produced in memory of him will be released. The legendary work is, of course, “CLIFF’ EM ALL”. This DVD is a meticulous reproduction of the highest quality version of the Japanese laser disc. This video was a truly bizarre masterpiece. At the time, METALLICA had declared that they would not make videos as anti-MTV (it’s hard to believe now), but after Cliff passed away, they decided to make a video to share his appearance and memories with their fans. However, since they had no intention of making a video in the first place, they had no material, so they collected various bootlegs and private footage and re-edited it to make it. Because of this background, most of the video was filled with live audience shots and unrelated conversation scenes, but this was extremely cool. The underground odor of quality was strongly exuded, and it depicted the essence of the band far better than many studio masterpieces. Moreover, it was super real. The live shots by the audience were full of intimacy, like a friend’s live performance, and the conversation scenes were meaningless, so you felt like you were in the same room as the members. Moreover, Cliff was there. We Japanese people never had the opportunity to meet Cliff in person, but despite that… no, because we couldn’t meet him, his true presence is particularly strong. And above all, “Moving METALLICA”. Nowadays, you can enjoy the complete version of each live performance, but at the time, this work was everything. I watched this video over and over again to touch the real METALLICA, and was blown away by Cliff’s talent, which could not be seen in the studio work. There are seven types of live performances recorded in this work. Since it’s a good opportunity, I’ll rearrange them in chronological order. Let’s organize the contents. 1983 March 19 San Francisco performance: (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth / Whiplash 1983 August 12 Chicago performance: No Remorse / Metal Militia 1985 September 14 METAL HAMMER FEST: Bass solo / The Four Horsemen / Fade to Black / Seek & Destroy 1985 August 31 DAY ON THE GREEN: Bass solo / For Whom the Bell Tolls 1986 April 4 Detroit performance: Creeping Death / Am I Evil? / Damage, Inc. 1986 April 28 Long Island performance: Master of Puppets 1986 July 6 ROSKILDE FESTIVAL: Welcome Home (Sanitarium) / (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth Another point is that this work is a Japanese laser disc. It is better in terms of quality than VHS, but the best thing is the Japanese subtitles. This video does not only feature live performances, but also documentary scenes inserted in between, allowing you to see Cliff when he was alive. “I have no intention of becoming big. I’m going to stay like this,” Cliff says, laughing as he drinks something naughty, saying, “It’s a special blend I got through a dealer.” The Japanese subtitles allow you to intuitively synchronize his expressions and words, and you can directly feel his personality (the subtitles are transcribed below, and the live MC is also included). Cliff Burton, who passed away at the young age of 24. This is a masterpiece video that can be said to be a symbol of that. Although this work was created by tragedy, there is no cheesy sentimentality or cheap tear-jerking in this work. It is an hour and a half of metal, rambling on about Cliff, who just lived his life. A legendary masterpiece video is released. This work was produced in memory of Cliff Burton, and is reprinted from the best Japanese laser disc. It is also fully subtitled in Japanese, so you can intuitively understand the content of the documentary scenes. Taken from the Japanese Laser Disc (VideoArts VAL-3869) 1. Conversation 2. Creeping Death 3. Conversation James: “Do you like it? A new wave of British Metal was coming, and I was sure it would be a hit in the States too. We were doing that in LA, but not many people got it.” Lars: “We started in a garage five years ago and have improved a bit, but we’re still just four silly guys. We try not to miss any notes or beats.” 4. Am I Evil? 5. Damage, Inc. 6. Conversation Cliff: “We’re just doing what we want to do.” James: “Some people think we’re popular because we’re on a major label, but we’d do the same thing if we were indie.” – A word to bands that have just formed? All: “Go! Fast! Go! Cliff: “We’re not trying to be big. Let’s stay like this.” 7. Master Of Puppets 8. Conversation – This is Metallica, a hot metal band from LA. First, tell us your name and the instrument you play. How long have you been together? Blow dryer, do his hair, dry it again, do his hair.” James: “When we took this photo of him sleeping on the waterbed, it was 100 degrees in the house.” 19. For Whom The Bell Tolls 20. Conversation Kirk: “Sit closer to me. That’s unnatural.” — Unnatural? Kirk: “Are you carrying a knife?” 21. No Remorse 22. Metal Militia 23. Conversation 24. Credit James: “Say something?
