Description

The masterpiece EP “HIDDEN TREASURES” released in the golden age has evolved to the ultimate! It has been super expanded to a 4-disc set that compiles all the rare tracks from the Marty Friedman/Nick Menza era. This work contains official studio recordings that last for 4 hours, 7 minutes and 31 seconds. The official “HIDDEN TREASURES” is a mini-album that collects songs that were not included on the albums from the Marty/Nick era. Usually, EPs are treated as singles and are quickly discontinued, but this mini-album is so great that it is still as popular as a regular studio album. This work inherits that spirit and is super expanded to about 8.5 times the volume. It completes all the studio treasures (other than the regular album tracks) that Marty/Nick were involved in. Moreover, this work is organized so that each disc can be enjoyed as a musical work. Let’s take a look at each one now. DISC 1: Songs not included in the album/Cover songs The first one to appear is the one that most strongly inherited the spirit of “HIDDEN TREASURES”. It is not a different version of the album songs, but a collection of 12 original “RARE SONGS” and 6 cover “COVERS” songs that were not regular songs on the album. The first half “RARE SONGS” is a masterpiece that goes beyond collection value. IRON MAIDEN’s non-album songs are not so good because they are too much for fun, but MEGADETH has plenty of powerful numbers such as the masterpiece “Breakpoint” and the representative song “Angry Again”. This disc, which brings them together in one big collection, is so complete that it can be listened to as a “new album from the golden age”. The second half “COVERS” is also a masterpiece with 100% completion. They have been known as cover masters since their first album, but this work is limited to the “Marty / Nick era”. However, this work also follows the delicate period when the two of them were not together. It includes “No More Mr. Nice Guy”, Nick’s first recording (before Marty joined the band), and “Never Say Die”, Marty’s final recording (after Nick left the band). The last song, “School’s Out”, is included in the Alice Cooper tribute album “HUMANARY STEW”, in which Mustaine and Marty participated. The other members are Bob Kulick (guitar), Bob Daisley (bass), Eric Singer (drums), and Paul Taylor (keyboards), so they are not MEGADETH, but the intertwining of Marty’s guitar and Mustaine’s voice makes it a totally MEGADETH listen. DISC 2: A collection of alternative versions from the RUST IN PEACE/COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION era The following DISC 2 is a collection of alternative versions. Treasure tracks scattered across various compilations, singles, bonus tracks, etc. are reconstructed for each album. There are many demos, but these are not to be underestimated. For example, METALLICA’s demos are “just half-done”, but MEGADETH’s are full of interesting and cool tracks, such as the “RUST IN PEACE” number with Chris Poland playing lead. The demo of “Countdown To Extinction” is particularly interesting. The official version features a simple arrangement with a lot of lyric melodies, but this work is full of elaborate rhythms and gear changes like “RUST IN PEACE”. While aiming for simplification and melody, the voice of the soul that says “I want to develop the song after all …” can’t be shaken off (laughs). That’s what makes it cool, which is why it’s MEGADETH. Also, the last song on DISC 2 is not a demo, but “Symphony Of Destruction (Radio Mix)”. It’s the version included in the single, but it’s very similar to the official album version. If you listen carefully, you can hear the sound of a machine after the lyrics “Actin’ like a robot” in the album version, but in the “Radio Mix” there is a robotic voice (please compare it with the album version you have. I guarantee you will want to ask for a while, “Why did they make this version!?”). DISC 3: A collection of different versions from the YOUTH A N ASIA/CRYPTIC WRITINGS/RISK era DISC 3 is the second part of the collection of different versions. The nostalgic instrumental album “CRYPTIC SOUNDS” is also reissued (the instrumental version of “Trust” is included in the rarer compilation album “ECW EXTREME MUSIC”, but it is basically the same as “CRYPTIC SOUNDS”). The tracks I want to focus on here are the ones that were “actually different versions”. First, “Crown Of Worms”. The take is different between the “original version” included in the 1994 single and the Japanese version of “YOUTHANASIA” and the “current version” of the bonus track on the remastered version “COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION”. In particular, the vocal melody is different, and the “current version” has a guitar solo that was not included in the “original version”. In this work, it is included on “DISC 1 = current version” / “DISC 3 = original version”. The following “New World Order” is even more complicated. Even if we ignore the re-recorded version of “TH1RT3EN”, there are two versions even in the “Marty / Nick era”. It was credited as “DEMO” on the single “A Tout Le Monde” where it first appeared, and there was no special note on the soundtracks “DUKE NUKEM”, “WARCHEST” and “ANTHOLOGY”, but these are the same take (also called “original version”). However, the bonus track on the current remastered version “YOUTHANASIA” is credited as “DEMO”, but it is a different take from the “original version”. The “original version” has a large count at the beginning, but once the song starts, it is highly complete. The “current version” has no count and is the finished version, but in fact the guitar phrases and solos that are the companions to the vocals are incomplete. This work includes the highly complete “original version = DISC 1” and the incomplete “current version = DISC 3”. Furthermore, “Diadems” is a different version with no credits, which will make collectors cry. In most cases, it is the same as the original version provided by the soundtrack album “DEMON KNIGHT”, but the box set “WARCHEST” is different. It is a completely different take that is more than 20 seconds longer and features a large ocarina. And the final blow is “Duke Nukem Theme”. This is the same in all bonus tracks and best albums, and only the original soundtrack album is different, with different scats and lines overlaid. It is a confusing take because it is incorrectly credited as “recorded from the soundtrack” in “WARCHEST” and “ANTHOLOGY”. DISC 4: Electro-themed remix album I’ve been talking about a lot of strange details, but this is an interesting studio work even if you don’t have any basic knowledge. In particular, DISC 4, which concludes the album, is a collection of super-entertaining remixes that will take you to another world from the moment you play it. Different mixes are also included on DISC 2/3, but they are just something the band tried out. In contrast, DISC 4 was remixed by an outside artist and completely remade. It’s a remix album that has been reborn as electro music. From the beginning, two super cool songs pop out: “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due (General Schwarzkopf Mix)” and “Symphony Of Destruction (Gristle Mix)”. This remix was one of the first to introduce the industrial sound that was just starting to emerge at the time, but the ruthless and mechanical sound matches the original aggressiveness of MEGADETH. In particular, “Symphony Of Destruction (Gristle Mix)” was produced by Trent Reznor, and is a masterpiece with a strange sense of tension that exceeds the original. In terms of rarity, “Almost Honest (Danny Saber Mix)” and “I’ll Get Even (Part II)” are also high points. The former is the soundtrack for the game “MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION”, and the latter is the version included in the American comic image album “SONGS OF THE WITCHBLADE”. It is a treasure that you cannot encounter just by checking MEGADETH’s singles and best albums. I have summarized it above, but it is a treasure collection of 57 tracks, 4 hours, 7 minutes and 31 seconds. Our store has received great reviews for the super-definitive live album “COMPLETE LIVE TRAX 1990-1997” from the golden age, and this work can be said to be the studio rare track edition. Or you could say it’s the MEGADETH version of IRON MAIDEN’s smash hit “ULTIMATE STUDIO WORKS: THE DICKINSON YEARS”. For normal bands, rare tracks tend to fill holes in their collections, but MEGADETH’s tracks are cool to listen to at a glance, and the more you delve into them, the more interesting they become. Even the outtakes and demos are filled with Mustaine’s aesthetics and the fulfillment of the Marty/Nick era. This is a super-entertaining masterpiece that brings together the treasures of the golden era. This is a four-disc set that brings together all the official studio rare tracks from the golden “Marty/Nick era”. The quality is of course official, and each disc is classified as “DISC 1 = non-album songs/covers”, “DISC 2/3 = alternative versions”, and “DISC 4 = electro-style remix album”, so you can enjoy each one as a new studio work. For normal bands, rare tracks tend to fill holes in their collections, but MEGADETH’s tracks are cool to listen to at a glance, and the more you delve into them, the more interesting they become.
