Description
“PEACE SELLS…BUT WHO’S BUYING?” is a masterpiece among masterpieces that both Lars Ulrich and Scott Ian have given high praise to. Along with METALLICA’s “MASTER OF PUPPETS” and SLAYER’s “REIGN IN BLOOD”, it is a monumental thrash metal work that symbolizes the golden “1986”. A masterpiece that precisely reproduces its original sound and original form has been decided to be released. The true identity of this work is the test press LP of “PEACE SELLS…” produced by the MUSIC FOR NATIONS label. If you suddenly say that it is a precisely digitized version of that, you may not get it. First, let’s explain it step by step from the basics. “PEACE SELLS…” is the first release after the transfer to major label CAPTOL RECORDS, and it was a masterpiece that became the stepping stone for MEGADETH’s success. However, during the production, they were not affiliated with CAPTOL, but with the indie COMBAT RECORDS. It was the same environment as their debut album “KILLING IS MY BUSINESS… AND BUSINESS IS GOOD!” “PEACE SELLS…” was completed once in an environment funded by COMBAT, but then the decision was made to move to CAPTOL. CAPTOL instructed Paul Lanni to remix it, not the completed master. The official version of “PEACE SELLS…” that is now widely known was released. This work was born in the midst of such a chaotic transfer. COMBAT’s UK sales were handled by MUSIC FOR NATIONS, but they sent the first completed COMBAT version of “PEACE SELLS…” for test pressing. This test version was a very small press of less than 10 copies, and there was no actual pressing due to the decision to move to CAPTOL. Of course, it was not available on the general market, and it was even called the phantom of the phantom, the holy grail of MEGADETH. This work is a digitized version of such an ultra-rare LP. It is the COMBAT version of “PEACE SELLS…” that Randy Burns finished before the remix. If you have read this far, you may be thinking, “Oh, Randy Burns Mix?” In fact, that is correct. Four songs were bonus tracks on the 2004 reissue of “PEACE SELLS…”, and it was also fully reissued in the 25th anniversary box. It should have been a sound source that had already served its purpose, but that was not the case. The official reissue was mastered with a powerful push, perhaps to match the latest remaster of the official version, and the peaks were raised, resulting in an uneven sound. However, this work was created from the real analog of 1986. There is no artificial equalization, and the sound is natural all the way. It is a glossy sound that beautifully draws a mountain from the rise to the silence of one sound. This is actually important. For example, the official version has a tight drum sound and emphasizes the attack sound, but the COMBAT original has a natural sound. However, in the official reprint, the impact sound is stronger due to the sound pressure, making it difficult to feel the precious “ringing”. In addition, the effects on the vocals highlight Mustaine’s ominousness in the official version, but COMBAT is a standard type. This flavor was also diluted in the emphasized remaster. In addition, the timing of the digitalization is also a point. The 25th anniversary box was produced in 2011, but the test pressing was produced in 1986. There was no way that the newly completed master tape would deteriorate over time, and the test disc had the sound of the freshly recorded master itself engraved on it. Mustaine himself likes Randy Burns’ original mix, and this is the real thing. The production credit engraved on the masterpiece is “Randy Burns and Dave Mustaine”. These two people built up one take at a time from the basic tracks, and the sound they ultimately aimed for. This work is the real thing. This is the “real PEACE SELLS…BUT WHO’S BUYING?” before it was distorted by the power of major labels, the sound that only the master tape from 1986 could capture, the raw sound that has not been digitally remastered. This masterpiece has been reissued from an extremely rare test pressing. Taken from the original UK Test Pressing LP (Music For Nations, MFN64) 1. Wake Up Dead 2. The Conjuring 3. Peace Sells 4.
