Description

“Behind The Lens” is a documentary program produced in the UK in 1992 that focuses on Linda McCartney’s life as a photographer and has been highly acclaimed internationally. The original BBC program itself can be viewed on YouTube, but this version is a 45-minute recording of the Japanese broadcast version, which was broadcast only once on the Japanese national television station as part of a series of overseas masterpieces under the title “Linda McCartney – The Photographer Who Photographed Rock”. The image quality is perfect, as it is directly recorded from a video master recorded by a enthusiast. The original interviews with Linda, Paul McCartney, and other related parties, as well as commentary, are in English, so although the content is very interesting, it is difficult for us Japanese to understand the content. However, this version, of course, is broadcast in Japan, so it is covered with careful Japanese commentary, subtitles, and dubbing in just the right balance, making it a very moving piece of work. Linda, who was just an amateur photographer, talks about how she became a successful rock photographer, her meeting with Paul, her marriage, and her outlook on life and values through photography. In the late 1960s, when she made her name as a photographer, she talks about the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, Janis Joplin, Clapton, the WHO, and other artists, and each of these stories is very interesting. (She became famous for her work at a Rolling Stones photo session, which she happened to sneak into, and later, she was in charge of the cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Electric Ladyland”, but Linda’s photo was only used on the inside of the cover and the front was replaced with a nude cover, which Jimi didn’t like.) After that, the scene shifts to her marriage to Paul. “In 1969, Linda Eastman married Paul McCartney and found herself in the middle of a public hysteria. As Mrs. McCartney, Linda was the target of unjustified criticism.” Paul then appeared in an interview. Paul said, “You don’t marry a Beatle. Anyone would be criticized,” followed by Linda saying, “When Paul and I got married, female fans all over the world panicked. Who is this divorced American woman? Why doesn’t Paul marry the girl he’s been dating for years? Our marriage was completely unexpected for them.” It’s a very interesting scene. The program focuses on Linda’s side as a photographer, so it deliberately excludes her activities as a member of Wings and her work as a musician, and includes stories about her realistic outlook on life, values, and even charity and environmental activities. The deep content of this show, which is different from other tacked-on musician documentaries, will deeply move the viewer. It is unlikely that this show will be rebroadcast in Japan in the future, so if you are a fan, be sure to add it to your collection.
