Description
For IRON MAIDEN, it was the first day they learned about the world, and for Japanese people, it was the first day they learned about “heavy metal born from heavy metal.” “May 21st, Tokyo Welfare Pension Hall” was a very special night. Because it is such a monumental concert, we have prepared a documentary album that is even closer to the audience’s perspective! This work is a master that was once released as part of “TOKYO KILLERS”, and was made directly into CD from the recording artist’s own cassette. Although it cannot be said to be on the same level as the super clear sound of the CD “TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT”, it is a recording that was very popular among enthusiasts for its freshness and realism derived from the original cassette. You might think, “But isn’t the rank of the same live falling?”, and it is true now that the main press CD has appeared. However, even so, the realism that overflows from this work is a must-listen. The main press CD completely records the live main part for 77 and a half minutes, but this work is more than 15 minutes (!) longer than that live. The most impressive part is the beginning. The tape starts spinning 9 minutes before the performance begins, and you can hear plenty of the strange mood of anticipation and excitement. The opening announcement symbolizes this atmosphere. The announcement is made by a male staff member who is different from the current Japanese Warbler, riding on SCORPIONS’ “Black Out.” Let’s write out the whole sentence. “Huh? Thank you for coming to the Iron Maiden concert today. Huh? Tonight is the first day. The members are working hard. I’m sure we’ll be able to hear a great performance. Please do not stand up, climb onto chairs, or run to the front of the stage. If you do not comply, the concert may be temporarily suspended or canceled. We strongly hope that the members will be able to perform until the end.We ask each and every one of our customers to cooperate in an orderly manner until the end.The performance will start soon.We look forward to seeing you.The members are also working hard. His historical enthusiasm proves that he is genuine, but even more so, the tone of his words that put a lot of effort into his words reveals the difficult times that followed the 1978 RAINBOW tragedy that resulted in a fatality. What’s more, tonight’s star is IRON MAIDEN, the embodiment of aggression of our time. The feelings of the staff, who are worried about what kind of rampage will occur, come to mind vividly. This mood is also conveyed through the voices of the audience. While UFO’s “Doctor, Doctor” was playing, they said things like “AC/DC is here…” and “I want to learn English conversation too.” Nowadays, everyone knows that this is the song that announces the arrival of IRON MAIDEN, so there is an uproar, but this is the first day of their first visit to Japan. The audience thinks of it as just background music. And yet, because the conversation is so casual, you can clearly feel the restlessness of the audience, who have more feelings in their hearts than they expected. It has a unique atmosphere that is similar to ZED ZEPPELIN, DEEP PURPLE, and later METALLICA’s first visit to Japan. The opening of the venue is filled with a unique atmosphere of wanting to witness new music. Then, during “Doctor, Doctor,” there was a sudden blackout and “The Ides Of March” made the audience go crazy! As I mentioned in the commentary for the main story, the roar of the wild bastard and the yellow screams are layered over and over again, and “Wrathchild” creates a fever that is unique to Japan and unlike anywhere else in the world!! This overwhelming realism. This is the “audience side scene”. Since then, records have continued to record the audience’s precise handclaps, loud choruses, and emotional screams for each and every song. Originally, in recordings that emphasize reality, the musical tones tend to be neglected, but in this work, such enthusiasm and musical tones are half & half. It is a rare recording where you can fully enjoy the taste of music accompanied by enthusiasm. Plenty of footage was recorded after the performance, including final announcements such as “Charlot The Harlot is here”, “I told you we wouldn’t do that song”, “I’ll never forget…”, etc., leaving the venue excited. It also clearly records the sounds of the audience saying, “How do you like the program? We’re currently holding a program to commemorate your visit to Japan…”. The CD “TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT”, which was created from Kinney’s unreleased cassette, is a great album that will remain in the history of IRON MAIDEN, no, heavy metal history, and audience recording history. It is because it is so moving that this work, which is closer to the “audience” side than the main story, also shines. “TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT” and “1ST NIGHT DOCUMENTARY MASTER” breathe out two different expressions while breathing in the atmosphere of the venue, which is a monument to the band and Japan.
