Description
Even in Bowie’s long career, a live album that captures the moment of the climax is now available. The longest, largest, and most successful of Bowie’s world tours was “SERIOUS MOONLIGHT TOUR 1983.” It was a huge tour that attracted tens of thousands of people around the world, but one of the highlights was the performance in Milton Keynes in his homeland of England. It was a huge event, attracting approximately 175,000 people over three consecutive days. Although it did not reach the huge festival “US FESTIVAL’83” in terms of the number of people, it recorded this much mobilization almost just “to see Bowie”. This work is an audience album recorded on the second day of such three consecutive performances, “July 2, 1983 Milton Keynes Bowl”. It is clear that the song has reached its climax, and when it is played back, a huge cheer suddenly erupts. The venue, which was filled with a crowd estimated to be between 40,000 and 60,000 people, was cheering loudly, literally breaking the news. At this point, I thought, “This is crazy, this is a master of explosive sound…”, but I was surprised by the strange beauty of the musical sound that cut through the loud cheers! “Milton Keynes Bowl” is a huge outdoor venue, but the sound is so clear that you can’t believe it’s outdoors. It’s no wonder that the contours of musical notes are washed away by the wind, or that there is a strange time difference, but every single note of the bass and drums is beautiful, and even when you strum an acoustic guitar, each stroke of it sounds fine. The sharpness is conveyed. Of course, Bowie’s singing voice is also recorded neatly. That’s no wonder, this work was recorded by one of Britain’s leading recording artists. He is known as a world-renowned taper who has released many famous recordings by Eric Clapton and others. (Although it’s not as if it’s a cat or a ladle like it is today.) Despite the explosive increase in the number of recording artists in the 1980s, it is regrettable that the know-how that continued to produce high-quality recordings that could ward off numerous tapers. It is fully demonstrated. If it weren’t for such virtuosity, impossible sounds would flow out without stagnation. Moreover, this work is amazing because it is packed with the beauty of musical sounds and the peak of popularity. I wrote earlier that “it doesn’t feel like an outdoor venue,” but that’s just a matter of quality. Although it is a beautiful sound, it does not echo in a wide space and feels like it is being sucked into the sky. The sense of openness that sings out to endless distances, “Delivering it all the way!” is definitely unique to the outdoors. Moreover, the three-dimensional effect of the loud cheers that come and go in a variety of ways, from ripples to giant waves, can only be experienced outdoors. That sense of scale is unique to this work even in many Bowie recordings. When I write this, you may be worried that I’m the type of person who searches for musical notes amidst the loud cheers. At the beginning, I wrote, “It’s hard to crack.” But don’t worry. The opening scene is “just cracking”, but I wonder if I was relieved there (lol), and after that I can enjoy plenty of Bowie music, and during the performance, there is not even a conversation near the taper. It is the type of recording where the spectacle of loud cheers erupts every time one song is finished. The sense of scale that comes from being such a huge venue, the sense of fulfillment that comes with achieving success, and the sense of openness that makes you feel like you’re singing to the world far away. This is a live album in which the world-famous taper recorded all of this with clear sound. Bowie became a pop star and was also making waves around the world with his movies. This is a book filled with huge spectacles that were only possible because of him. An unprecedented big scale album in Bowie’s life.
