Description

The 2017 “A Head Full of Dreams Tour” started in Asia, and the final performance was held on April 19th at the Tokyo Dome, their first ever dome concert in Japan. The memorable night was recorded in the best quality by matrixing the line sound source from the uncompressed multi-ear monitor source used by Chris on stage and the digital audience master from the front row. First of all, it has been 17 years since their first visit to Japan, and although they have been headliners at Fuji Rock and Summer Sonic, this is their first time performing at a dome alone, and since they have already become a stadium band overseas, we can finally experience their epic performance at a dome in Japan. And as expected, the stage was decorated with amazing productions from start to finish, including lasers, LED wristbands, confetti, balloons and pyro, and it can be said that everything from the start to the end was a climax. And at the opening, they counted down the countries they had visited while marking them on a map, and when the mark reached Japan and Tokyo, the first song “A Head Full Of Dreams” burst out at once, and the zylobands flashed all at once, Chris Martin ran down the runway lit by the screen that had become a giant light source, and rainbow-colored confetti and cheers fell on him. Then the zylobands wrapped around his wrists started to flash yellow, and after moving on to “Yellow”, the three circular giant screens on the stage projected the audience in real time, becoming a source of color and light. After that, “The Scientist”, which started with Chris’ piano and acoustic guitar, changed from the pop world that had been colored in Technicolor until just before to natural colors, and while the performance itself was surprisingly simple, a variety of light and color productions were produced one after another based on the ground design that had been constructed. After finishing “Paradise”, which shook the arena with an EDM version remixed by Tiesto, the members moved to the circular center stage connected by a catwalk, and “Always In My Head” began, and the next few songs were chilled out. “Everglow”, which featured Muhammad Ali’s speech, combined with solemn images like stained glass in a church, became the first period song of the day’s performance, and then “Clocks” and the ambient “Midnight”, from there to the EDM & hip-hop party-ready “Charlie Brown” and “Hymn For The Weekend”, the extreme beautiful melody “Fix You”, and finally “Midnight” again, the set cycled to give you goosebumps. While the audience was still in awe of the funky and gorgeous festival atmosphere of “Adventure Of A Lifetime” with colorful balloons being released, the members moved under the runway and appeared on the stage directly under the back stand seats, and of course the whole venue sang along to the acoustic version of “In My Place”. After the introduction of the members, Will and Johnny sang lead vocals for “Don’t Panic”, and Guy added some flair with his blue harp for “Til Kingdom Come”, and after a simple acoustic set, the members returned to the main stage again, and Chris introduced the next song as “The first song we’ve ever played, Tokyo only!”, and the new song “All I Can Think About Is You”, which was the world’s first performance, started. At this point, Chris made a mistake by leaving his microphone behind, so the performance had to start over from the intro, and Chris’ MC said, “Don’t upload that to YouTube!”, which made the atmosphere more relaxed. As far as the live version goes, it’s a fairly innovative song for them, starting with a minimal rhythm loop and piano, then turning to Johnny’s guitar solo in the second half, and Will’s powerful drum rolls going back and forth between the toms and snare, this number that really shows off their performance skills is something to look forward to in the studio. Their latest hit, a collaboration with The Chainsmokers, “Something Just Like This” is a super party tune with pyro blasts, and “A Sky Full Of Stars” is another confetti blast, followed by “Up & Up”, played slowly and carefully, as if savoring the emotion of the finale, which is also moving.
